ART TALKS "FEASTING THE EYE"

Join us for an insightful art talk on the evolution of the still life genre, exploring the symbolic significance of food and flowers throughout the history of art.
1.5 Hours
Art Zone (Rua Reinaldo Ferreira 18B)
English/ French

DISCOVER THE ENVOLVING POWER OF THE STILL LIFE

Still life, the least considered genre, has evolved from a simple inventory of objects to a powerful reflection of societal shifts. From the ostentatious displays of wealth in early capitalism to the philosophical depth found in everyday objects.

Join us for an exploration of how this genre has mirrored the rise of capitalism, ostentation, and philosophical depth.

After discussing the main themes of still life, we will delve into related topics in an engaging debate:

  • Is foodstagramming the new Memento Mori?
  • How did the Portuguese Great Discoveries Era influence European painting?
  • What religious, political, and social symbols can be found in food and flowers?
  • How can a half-peeled lemon be so philosophical?

Don't miss this insightful art talk on the evolution of the still life and its profound impact on our understanding of society.
